Our students, who serve as Hilltop Mentors, apply for the position through the Hilltop Life Organization and are strategically partnered with one of the younger learners based on the interests, needs, skills, and attributes of both. In addition to the application and selection process for becoming a mentor, all mentors are required to participate in training, following expectations outlined in the Mentor Agreement. Periodic check-ins with mentors are scheduled in order to monitor progress and to discuss any concerns.
Activities may include and are not limited to tutoring, recreational activities (indoor/outdoor), dining together, field trips, attendance at mentor/mentee events and/or school events. At the end of the year, we hold a mentor celebration and allow time for individual, private reflection to determine the direction of the mentoring partnership for the following year.
Our partner mentors are identified through our connections with local colleges and universities, businesses, organizations, and agencies. Mentors are strategically partnered with our upper level students just as we do with our student mentors. The aim of these partnerships is a bit broader, with the intention of modeling the role of a mentor and attending to needs of an older learner. In addition to building a caring and trusting mentor-mentee relationship, providing guidance on sound decision-making and goal setting surrounding career, college, finances, and adulting are some of the things these mentors do.
Reverse mentoring is designed for our faculty and staff, ensuring that our adults have what they need to feel connected, guided, and supported. Through this program the two people in the partnership serve as both mentor and mentee. It is a unique opportunity for each to share their expertise, talents, and experience while getting support they need. One example of a reverse mentor partnership would be pairing one of our novice teachers who is skilled in technology with one of our more seasoned teachers skilled in pedagogy.
It is our mission to guard and protect the diversity of our Hilltop Community- those we serve and lead and those who lead and serve.
